Carl Compton (fifth President of Anatolia College 1950-1958).

“This man was a saint, at least this is how we remember him. He was a man of principle who taught by example, who would walk on campus and pick up litter and throw it in the bin -how could then one dare to throw litter on the ground? He was very fair, very just and for those who know his story it is noteworthy that he voluntarily went to Russia on his honeymoon with his wife Ruth. They crossed the whole country, from Vladivostok to Moscow and reached Caucasus in order to serve the refugees before and during World War I. His wife, Ruth Compton, was equally dear to us; I don’t know, in our eyes they were like saints, missionaries.”

“Compton’s philosophy of education was based on two axes, the one axis was a deep Greek-centered education, the other was the best of liberal American education […] But I think Compton, because he was prominent in the broad sense of the word, saw the value of Greek education.”

“Compton was his only defender […] This shows his ethical stance, his principles. To my knowledge, this has never happened before. His defense was very strong, he confirmed with great conviction that ‘he was my student, I can assure you in all honesty and truthfulness that it’s impossible that he murdered Polk.’ He didn’t just present a nuanced image of Staktopoulos to alleviate his sentence, he outrightly ruled this possibility out. I was astonished when I read this”.
